Prof. Dr. Jaco Barkhuizen is the Program Chair for Science in Policing and Security at Rabdan Academy in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Prior to this role, he served as Head of the Department and Full Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Limpopo in Polokwane, South Africa. Before his tenure at Limpopo, he was Head of the Department and Associate Professor in the Department of Criminology at the University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Earlier in his career, he was a lecturer at Monash University’s South African campus in Johannesburg.
Prof. Barkhuizen began his academic journey at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in Psychology and Criminology. He continued his studies at the University of Port Elizabeth (now Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University), graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology. He then completed another Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Criminology at the University of Pretoria. His pursuit of advanced studies led him to a Master of Arts in Psychology at the University of Pretoria, where his research focused on South African serial killers. His dissertation was titled “An Exploration of the Intra-Psychic Development and Personality Structure of Serial Killers Through the Use of Psychometric Testing.”
While working on his Master’s degree, Prof. Barkhuizen was awarded the prestigious Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship from the Japanese government, enabling him to pursue a doctoral degree at Tokiwa University in Japan. His doctoral research, titled “Sexual Molestation on Public Transportation: A Victimological Approach,” resulted in him earning the first recognized dedicated full Doctorate in Human Science: Victimology and made him the first non-Asian valedictorian at Tokiwa University.
Prof. Barkhuizen has an extensive publication record, with articles and book chapters in South Africa, India, Japan, and North America. He has also delivered papers and keynote addresses across Africa, North America, Europe, and Asia.
