Dr. Johannes Oosthuizen
Lecturer, Policing & Security Program
Dr. Johannes Pieter Oosthuizen is lecturer at the Rabdan Academy in the U.A.E. He is a former military and police officer with over 24 years’ service in the South African Defence Force and Dorset Police. Johannes taught at the University of West London, University of Greenwich (London) as well the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan, New York. Prior to joining Rabdan Academy, he was the Director of the Institute of Policing and senior lecturer at the University of Winchester.
Johannes holds a Foundation Degree in Policing, a Bachelor’s degree with Honours in Police Studies as well as a Master’s degree (with merit) in Criminology & Criminal Justice. He has completed a Professional Doctorate with the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies at the University of Portsmouth and his research interests are in policing, criminology, criminal justice, forensic criminology and comparative criminal justice.
Human Rights & Ethics in Policing and Community Policing
Johannes has published with Springer (New York) on neighbourhood policing (2018) and has spoken at various seminars, symposiums and conferences, namely the University of Portsmouth, Australian Institute of Police Management, New South Wales, Australia and South Limburg Police in Maastricht, The Netherlands. He has also worked with the FBI (Washington) on his research into violent extremism as well as the FBI (New York) on a study with Infragard, to research private sector & law enforcement collaboration.
He was nominated for student-led teaching awards at the University of Winchester from 2015-2018 and winner the future Focus Award in 2015. He was also a recipient of a Dorset Police commendation for his work on domestic abuse (2013) and a Community Champion Award winner (2011) and recipient of the John Jay Community Safety Award for his contribution toward a high-profile homicide investigation.
